What it pays

A lump sum on diagnosis

Serious illness cover, also known as specified illness cover, pays a lump sum if you are diagnosed with one of the illnesses listed in the policy. You choose how to use it: clear debts, replace income while you recover, pay for treatment or adapt your home.

The illnesses covered, and how each one is defined, vary from insurer to insurer. One insurer may pay in full on a condition another pays only in part. That is why we compare the definitions, not only the price.

  • A lump sum on diagnosis of a covered illness
  • Yours to use however you need
  • Definitions differ between insurers
  • Children covered on some plans
How to buy it

Standalone or accelerated?

Standalone cover is a separate amount. A claim pays the serious illness benefit and leaves any life cover in place. Accelerated cover is part of your life cover: a serious illness claim is paid from the life cover, which then reduces or ends.

Accelerated cover usually costs less, because the insurer pays once. Standalone cover protects more, because your family still has life cover after you claim. Some insurers also offer independent cover on the same plan as life cover. We price each way so you can see the difference.

  • Standalone: a separate lump sum, life cover untouched
  • Accelerated: paid from your life cover
  • Independent: separate cover on the same plan as life cover
  • Each priced side by side
Partial payments

Paid in part for less severe conditions

Many plans also make a partial payment for less severe conditions or procedures. At Royal London Ireland, for example, the cover pays in full on 59 serious illnesses and makes a partial payment on 53 more, of €15,000 or 50% of the cover, whichever is lower.

Irish Life makes an additional payment on 23 listed conditions. Payments like these help when a diagnosis needs time off but does not meet the full definition. Plans from both also pay early on a terminal illness diagnosis.

  • Partial payments for less severe conditions
  • Children covered for a share of your cover on some plans
  • Early payment on terminal illness
  • Every definition compared before you choose

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers with the figures. If yours is not here, a senior advisor answers it in your review.

Which illnesses are covered?

Each insurer publishes its own list and its own definition of each illness, so two policies at the same price can pay out differently. Your advisor compares them before you choose.

How much serious illness cover do I need?

Enough to clear your debts and keep you going while you recover. Irish Life suggests, on average, about twice your yearly salary on top of the mortgage and other debts.

Is serious illness cover the same as income protection?

No. Serious illness cover pays one lump sum on diagnosis. Income protection pays a monthly income while you cannot work. Many people hold both.

Can I add serious illness cover to my mortgage protection?

Yes. The mortgage is then cleared on diagnosis of a covered illness as well as on death. It costs more.

Are children covered?

On some plans. Royal London Ireland's cover, for example, includes the children of the insured for a share of the serious illness benefit.

Can I buy serious illness cover on its own?

Yes. Standalone cover can be bought without any life cover.
