Multi-claim protection: illness cover that can pay more than once

Standard serious illness cover pays out once and ends. Multi-claim cover pays a share of your cover for each covered illness, treatment or surgery, and keeps the rest in place for later. A senior advisor compares it with standard cover for you.

How it works

Paid by severity, claimed more than once

Royal London Ireland's Multi-Claim Protection Cover pays a percentage of your cover based on how serious the illness, treatment or surgery is. There are eight levels, from 5% to 100%. Each claim reduces the cover left, and you can keep claiming until the full amount has been paid.

Life cover is built in, so if you die or are diagnosed with a terminal illness during the term, the cover that remains is paid. Your premium does not change after a claim, and there is no waiting period between claims for most events.

  • Eight payment levels, from 5% to 100% of your cover
  • Claim again as long as cover remains
  • Life and terminal illness cover built in
  • Premium stays the same after a claim
What it covers

What counts as a claim, in plain words

Claims are set by the impact on your life, not only by a list of diagnoses. Royal London Ireland's cover pays for cancer treatment such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, heart attack, stroke, major and smaller surgery, long stays in hospital or intensive care, and losing the ability to manage everyday tasks without help.

Your children are covered too, from birth to 18, or to 25 in full-time education, up to €25,000 per child, without reducing your own cover. The full definitions are in the insurer's policy conditions, and your advisor goes through them with you before you apply.

  • Cancer treatment, heart attack and stroke
  • Surgery, hospital stays and intensive care
  • Children's cover up to €25,000 per child
  • Every definition explained before you apply

Worked example: one illness, three claims

Royal London Ireland's own example. Mary is 42 and takes €100,000 of cover over 20 years for €49.71 a month. She is diagnosed with breast cancer and needs chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. Her premium stays at €49.71 a month after the claims.

ClaimShare of coverPaid to Mary
Chemotherapy20%€20,000
Radiotherapy20%€20,000
Major surgery to remove the tumour20%€20,000
Total paid60%€60,000
Cover left for the future40%€40,000

Who it suits

Who it suits, and who it does not

Multi-claim cover suits people who want cover for a broad range of health setbacks and would value a payment for a less severe illness or an early treatment. Royal London Ireland says it may also suit people who could not get standard serious illness cover, such as people with diabetes or a history of heart attack or cancer, with the related claims taken out of the policy.

It is not designed to replace your income, and it may not pay 100% on a diagnosis that a standard policy would pay in full. If you want a large lump sum to clear debts on a serious illness, standard cover or income protection may fit better. Your advisor puts them side by side.

  • A broad range of health setbacks covered
  • An option for people declined for standard cover
  • Not a replacement for income protection
  • Compared with standard cover before you choose

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers with the figures. If yours is not here, a senior advisor answers it in your review.

What is multi-claim protection?

Illness and life cover that pays a percentage of your cover for each covered event, based on how severe it is, and keeps paying until the full amount has been used. Royal London Ireland describes its Multi-Claim Protection Cover as unique in the Irish market.

How is it different from serious illness cover?

Standard serious illness cover pays a lump sum when a listed illness meets the policy definition, and the main cover then ends. Multi-claim cover pays smaller amounts for less severe events and keeps the rest of your cover in place.

Do other insurers offer cover that pays more than once?

Other insurers build extra payments into standard cover. Irish Life's Specified Illness Cover, for example, covers 48 main illnesses and makes an additional payment for 41 further listed conditions. We compare both approaches.

Does my premium go up after a claim?

No. On Royal London Ireland's Multi-Claim Protection Cover the premium stays the same after a claim. It only rises if you chose indexation or increase your cover.

Can I get it if I have had cancer or have diabetes?

Often yes. Royal London Ireland can take out the claims linked to your history and cover you for the rest, along with the life cover. Your advisor checks this before you apply.

Does it replace income protection?

No. It pays a share of your cover when an event happens, not a monthly income while you cannot work. See our income protection page.

Who can apply?

Royal London Ireland accepts applicants aged 18 to 65, for terms of up to 40 years, ending by age 70.
