Every insurer compared

The same plan costs everyone the same, so the plan you pick matters

Irish health insurance is community rated. Everyone on a given plan pays the same price, whatever their age or health, apart from discounts for children and young adults and any late entry loading. No insurer can refuse to sell or renew your cover because of a medical condition.

So the saving comes from choosing the right plan. We compare VHI, Laya Healthcare and Irish Life Health, including Vhi, Laya Healthcare and Irish Life Health, and line up plans that cover the hospitals and benefits you care about.

  • VHI, Laya Healthcare and Irish Life Health compared
  • Plans matched to the hospitals you want
  • Benefits you do not use kept out of the price
  • A review before every renewal
Lifetime community rating

Starting after 34 costs more, for ten years

If you first buy health insurance at 35 or older, you pay a loading of 2% of the gross price for each year over 34 you went without cover. Start at 45 and the loading is 22%, so a €1,000 plan costs €1,220. The loading lasts for up to ten years and is capped at 70%.

Earlier cover counts. Years you held health insurance as an adult reduce the loading, and a break of up to 13 weeks does not add to it.

  • 2% for each year over 34 without cover
  • Capped at 70%, paid for up to ten years
  • Credit for earlier cover as an adult
  • Breaks of up to 13 weeks allowed

Switching

Switch at renewal without losing your cover

Most health insurance runs for 12 months. You can switch insurer or plan at renewal, and every insurer gives you 14 days from the renewal date to cancel for a full refund. Waiting periods you have already served carry across to the new insurer, as long as your break in cover is no more than 13 weeks.

Moving to a plan with higher benefits can bring waiting periods of up to two years on the extra benefits, and 52 weeks on higher maternity cover. Until then you keep the cover of your old plan. A move to the same or a lower level brings no new waiting periods.

  • Switch at renewal, inside the 14-day window
  • Waiting periods served carry across
  • Up to two years on upgraded benefits only
  • We arrange the new plan and the timing

Tax relief at source

Health insurance premiums get tax relief at 20%, applied by the insurer as a discount on the price, so there is nothing to claim. The relief applies to up to €1,000 a year for each adult, worth up to €200, and up to €500 for each child under 21, worth up to €100.

If your employer pays for your cover, it is a benefit in kind, and you claim the relief from Revenue yourself.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers with the figures. If yours is not here, a senior advisor answers it in your review.

Which insurers do you compare?

Every insurer on the Irish market, including Vhi, Laya Healthcare and Irish Life Health. We do not recommend a plan until we have compared them.

Will I serve waiting periods again if I switch?

Not for cover you already have, as long as your break is 13 weeks or less. Waiting periods apply only to higher benefits on the new plan: up to two years, and 52 weeks for higher maternity cover.

What are the waiting periods if I have never had health insurance?

Up to 26 weeks for new illnesses, five years for conditions you had before joining and 52 weeks for maternity. There is no waiting period for accidents and injuries.

Can an insurer refuse me because of my health?

No. Anyone can buy health insurance in Ireland, whatever their age, health or medical history. You may serve waiting periods when you first join.

Are there discounts?

Insurers may offer young adult rates to people aged 18 to 25 and discounts for children. A group of people can get a discount of up to 10%.

Can I switch in the middle of my contract?

Some insurers let you move to another of their own plans mid-contract. Leaving for another insurer mid-contract usually brings a cancellation charge, so we time the switch for your renewal.

My employer pays for my cover. Can you help?

Yes. We can review your plan with you, and we compare company plans for employers too. See group health insurance.
